Case Study Spotlight:

Telecom New Zealand

THE PROBLEM: A national telecom company had a problem with SharePoint and IIS authentication. Employees attempting to access important documents which belonged to other departments were running into dead-end error messages. Not only were they wasting time, but they were jeopardizing the security of corporate documents!

THE SOLUTION: IIS Mechanics built a graceful solution which intercepted the error response and redirected the user to the correct authorization form in SharePoint. Simple enough, but this task could only have been tackled at the Web server with an ISAPI filter, and the client had to make sure that the filter would be secure and hold up under heavy load and traffic.

THE RESULTS: With the IIS Mechanics solution installed, the client can now efficiently share knowledge and data across departments without sacrificing document security or access control. The project manager and client were very happy:

"Your team has done a great job, and I congratulate you. You've delivered the functionality we need on time and on budget, and you've help us with a very tricky technical issue. Please pass on my thanks and congratulations to your team of experts."

Other IIS Mechanics Client Tales

IIS Web Server Custom Coding:

- A California-based marketing consultancy needed to inject tracking scripts into requests intermittently for usability monitoring and A/B testing. An ISAPI filter did the trick and avoided making any changes to the complex site architecture.

- A dotcom start-up required a complex device sniffing and transformation engine to make sites PDA and WAP phone available. The IIS Mechanics team built a robust ISAPI filter, rules language, and interface to make this happen.

IIS Performance & Security Tuning:

- An advertising-supported free Web hosting provider found that users were hacking their site to steal bandwidth. IIS Mechanics helped them to lock down IIS security settings and boost performance with a detailed analysis of their servers and code.

- A major amusement park was having performance issues when they launched a brand new Web site... IIS Mechanics identified the bottlenecks and helped the site to serve more users with less data per request for maximum speed.

- A Web development company building a new site discovered a very specific bug that they thought was in the IIS Web server. After some analysis, the IIS Mechanics determined the problem to actually reside in the http.sys layer of Windows Server 2003, outside of IIS. They worked with the http.sys team at Microsoft to get the bug fixed fasted in Windows, and the Web development company kept their client happy!
